Allergies are overreactions of the immune system. They occur when the immune system fights harmless foreign substances such as dust mites, molds, pet dander or even food.
Allergies are common among children and they can occur at any age. Therefore, it is important for parents to understand what triggers your child’s symptoms and help your little one to reduce and prevent their allergy symptoms.
Symptoms of Allergies
An allergic reaction happens anywhere in the body and this includes the skin, eyes, stomach lining, nose, sinuses, throat and lungs. Allergic reaction can cause:
- Itchy rash
- Stuffy nose, sneezing or runny nose
- Itching in ears or roof of mouth
- Red, itchy, watery eyes
- Red, itchy, dry skin
- Hives or itchy welts
- Asthma symptoms (shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing)
Causes of Allergies
The most common triggers or allergens are:
- Foods (peanuts, eggs and milk)
- Medicines
- Trees, grass and weed pollens
- Molds and dust mites
- Pet dander
- Pests (cockroaches)
If you suspect that your child has an allergy, arrange an appointment to see a pediatrician to learn more about your child allergy symptoms and the effective treatment plan for your child.
To help you get the most from a visit to your child’s healthcare provider, we recommend starting a diary before the appointment and keeping track of what symptoms your child experiences and what you think causes them.
Early identification of childhood allergies will improve your little one’s quality of life and help you to care for your child better.
