Antenatal/Prenatal & Postnatal Care

Stepping into motherhood is a life-changing experience, filled with joyful anticipation and a profound sense of responsibility. As a woman who is pregnant, the importance of comprehensive prenatal and postnatal care cannot be underestimated. It is a key element for ensuring the well-being of both you and your precious little one.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) is essential to antenatal care, particularly if you have a high-risk pregnancy. MFM specialises in complex and high-risk obstetrics care for complicated pregnancies, focusing on keeping both mother and baby healthy before, during and after birth.

This speciality often involves fetal imaging, diagnostic testing, and other procedures to assess whether there are pregnancy risks and, if so, to manage these risks together with you. MFM specialists are also integral for prenatal counselling and coordination of care for patients.

What is prenatal care, and why is it important?

Prenatal care is a holistic approach to healthcare designed to monitor and support the health of the mother and her developing fetus during pregnancy. Prenatal care ensures a smooth and healthy pregnancy while identifying and managing potential complications early on.

At SWC Medical Group, we follow a structured schedule of regular check-ups tailored to your needs during each trimester. For a healthy pregnancy, we recommend:

  • Week 4 to 28: 1 prenatal visit per month
  • Weeks 28 to 36: 1 prenatal visit every two weeks
  • Weeks 36 to 40: 1 prenatal visit every week

Prenatal care services at SWC Medical Group

First trimester

The first trimester brings the excitement of seeing the baby for the first time. Our ultrasound services provide a detailed image, offering insights into the baby’s development and confirming a healthy pregnancy.

Assessment of risk (OSCAR)

The OSCAR test assesses the risk of fetal anomalies between 11 and 14 weeks, providing valuable information for early intervention if necessary.

Pre-eclampsia screening

Detecting and managing pre-eclampsia risks is crucial, and our screening processes ensure timely intervention to safeguard both mother and baby.

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) test

For certain high-risk pregnancies, CVS allows for early diagnosis of genetic conditions.

Second trimester

Fetal anomaly scan: This detailed scan comprehensively assesses the baby’s anatomy, detecting any potential abnormalities.

Fetal echocardiogram: A specialised ultrasound focused on the baby’s heart health, ensuring early detection of cardiac issues.

Amniocentesis: For further genetic testing, amniocentesis may be recommended, allowing for a more in-depth analysis of the baby’s chromosomes.

Fetal blood sampling:

In specific cases, fetal blood sampling may be necessary to assess the baby’s blood and identify potential issues.

Oral glucose tolerance test:

Screening for gestational diabetes is crucial during the second trimester, and our tests are designed for accuracy and early detection.

Third trimester

Ultrasound scans: Regular ultrasounds in the third trimester ensure the baby’s growth and development are on track, and potential issues are promptly identified.

Group B strep screening: Identifying and managing Group B streptococcus is crucial to prevent complications during labour.

Postnatal care services at SWC Medical Group

Our postnatal care services ensure the well-being of both mother and baby after delivery. The following are some critical postnatal checks.

Checking the baby’s well-being: Regular assessments to monitor the baby’s growth, development, and overall health.

Ensuring no apparent congenital abnormalities: Comprehensive examinations to rule out genetic abnormalities.

Checking the placenta is complete: Verifying the completeness of the placenta expulsion to prevent postpartum complications.

Ensuring blood loss is not excessive: Monitoring and managing postpartum bleeding to prevent complications.

Checking for tearing and episiotomy: Thorough examinations to identify any tears or the need for episiotomy, ensuring proper healing.

Checking the caesarean wound: For mothers who underwent caesarean sections, monitoring the incision site is crucial for a smooth recovery.

Common issues include gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and genetic abnormalities. Early detection and management are critical components of prenatal care.

Multiple pregnancies require closer monitoring due to increased risks. More frequent ultrasounds and assessments are typically recommended.

Prenatal screening tests have high accuracy rates but are not definitive. Further diagnostic tests may be recommended by your doctor for confirmation.

Prenatal testing is optional; decisions should be made based on personal preferences and discussions with your healthcare providers. Declining tests may limit early detection of potential issues.

The baby’s gender is typically determined through ultrasound during the second trimester.

Postnatal check-ups are usually scheduled within the first six weeks after childbirth to monitor the mother’s recovery and the baby’s well-being.

Postnatal care extends for several weeks and includes:

  • Monitoring the health of the mother and baby.
  • Addressing concerns.
  • Guiding postpartum recovery.

Antenatal packages may include regular check-ups, ultrasound scans, prenatal screenings, and specialist consultations. The specific inclusions can vary, and customised packages are available.

Signing up for an antenatal package early in pregnancy is advisable to ensure comprehensive care throughout the entire gestational period.
